Budget Bathroom Renovations/Facelifts

Renovation prices have been rising sharply in recent years, making it more expensive than ever to renovate and remodel. As a result, many people are seeking ways to improve their bathrooms without spending a lot of money.

If you have a bathroom with a good layout that just needs a facelift, or if you want to make it more modern for resale, then these renovations are a cost-effective option. And generally with facelifts, it is usually much more cost effective for clients to take on these projects as DIY’s.

Eight ways to improve your bathroom without a full renovation are -

  1. Changing over vanities or vanity tops. Over time vanities can start to deteriorate or just become a little outdated. So swapping them out or in some circumstances you can just change out the top, can give you a new modernised look. Sometimes you can even look at upcycling your current one with some new paint and handles.

  2. Changing basins and tapware. Again, these things can date or deteriorate over time. You will be surprised and how much of a difference bringing new ones in will make. Obviously, you need to be careful making sure they fit, and stick to the same as you have such as inset bathtubs or freestanding.

  3. Painting: Applying a fresh coat of paint on the walls can rejuvenate any room, including bathrooms.

  4. Refinish or Replace the Bathtub: While switching out a bathtub may not always be straightforward due to necessary plumbing adjustments, it can significantly improve the space, particularly if you have an old-fashioned colored bathtub. If you have a freestanding bath, stick to a freestanding option, and the same applies for built-in baths.

  5. Tiles: If your tiles are in good condition but need a refresh, you can consider regrouting or painting them. However, if you need to completely replace the tiles, keep in mind that this will lead to additional costs, as full waterproofing will be necessary. In such a case, it might be worth considering a full bathroom renovation, as you will already be halfway there.

  6. New lighting and or natural light. Something that so many look past however I truly believe lighting can make a world of difference to a room. Bringing in natural light if possible for a dark bathroom with something like a velux although they aren’t usually on the cheaper on of the scale they can make an amazing difference to a dark room. Of course, you can also opt for more affordable feature lighting like LED lights or a beautiful pendant. Either option can effectively enhance your space.

  7. New Mirror. Can elevate your space and bring in some elegance.

  8. Styling is often overlooked, especially when selling. After renovating a room, the styling is often neglected. However, it can drastically change how a space feels. Whether you have an eye for styling or want to hire a professional, it's important not to overlook this aspect.

If your layout works well and you are happy with it, that's great. However, if the layout doesn't work and you don't have the budget to remodel, it's best to make the most of it until you can create your dream space or leave it for the next person if you're selling. If a layout doesn't work, even a full renovation without a remodel will likely result in the next owner wanting to renovate, so it's best to save your money and prettying it up with cosmetic changes like painting etc and just style it as best you can leaving it to the next person.
